UNICEF rejects modifications made by Chamber of Deputies to Minors Code
SD. The United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) rejected the modifications made on Wednesday afternoon to the Minor's Code by the Chamber of Deputies.

This was stated by the representative of the agency in the Dominican Republic, the Spaniard Maria Jesus Conde, who also said that at no time was she consulted by the Congress, nor was her opinion asked for regarding the reformation of Law 136-03 on the Minor's Code.

"We learned about the decision of the Chamber of Deputies through the media," she said.

The UNICEF official said that they oppose the reformation that was approved "because we understand that it compromises the protection process of the rights of the boys, girls and adolescents promoted in the Dominican Republic and safeguarded in the recognized constitutional hierarchy and in the international treaties in force in the country.

According to Ms. Maria Jesus Conde, the deputies do not have "to know everything and because of this we ask for a moment to explain the situation to the deputies."

In this sense, she said that she would ask the Chamber of Deputies, the Attorney General of the Republic, the Supreme Court, the National Council on Childhood and the Justice Commission for a public hearing.

"The increase in the sentence does not resolve any of the problems of the lack of security of the citizens. It is not the minors who are responsible for the majority of the criminal acts that happen in the country," she said.
