Wessin y Wessin laid to rest
DOMINICAN REPUBLIC.- The former "Strong Man of San Isidro", Elias Wessin y Wessin, was laid to rest yesterday with military honors and personal expressions of regret at the Puerta del Cielo private cemetery.

Present at the burial ceremony were the Minister of the Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Pedro Peña Antonio, the Air Force chief of staff, Major General Carlos Rafael Altuna Tezanos, and the chief of staff of the Army, Joaquin Virgilio Perez Feliz.

The son of the former officer and president of the Partido Quesqueyano Dominicano (PQD), Elias Wessin Chavez, talked about the leadership qualities of his father and said, "it has been a historical mistake" to say that he fought against democracy when he resisted the constitutionalist forces in 1965, that tried to bring Professor Juan Bosch back to power.

"General Elias Wessin y Wessin did not frustrate democracy, General Elias Wessin saved democracy," he said.

The wake of the controversial military figure was held at the Blandino Funeral Home on Abraham Lincoln Avenue. It was there that political leaders, active and retired military personnel and many on the nation's personalities were seen paying their respects.
