More than half a million foreigners live in the Dominican Republic
SD. In the country there are 358,233 Haitians, which represents 87.3% of the immigrant population, according to the results of the First National Immigrant Survey (ENI-2013) of the Dominican Republic.

The census, carried out by the National Statistical Office, says that in the country there are 524,632 immigrants from at least 60 nations in the world living here. The number is equal to 5.4% of the national population with is estimated to be 9,716,940 inhabitants.

After Haiti, the next ten countries which provide the most immigrants are: United States, with 13.524; Spain, 6720; Puerto Rico,4416; Italy, 4040; China, 3,643, and France, 3599.

Also in the top ten are Venezuela, 3434; Cuba, 3145; Colombia, 2738; and Germany with 1792. The majority of these immigrants live in urban areas.

Men represent 64%, in the majority Haitians, and 35.6% are women. The study covered 68,000 housing units and inhabited places where 13,449 interviews were conducted.

The results of the survey, carried between 31 July and 30 September 2012, were released yesterday during an activity held in the Green Hall of the Presidential Palace, headed by the Minister of Economy, Planning and Development, Temistocles Montas.

According to the survey, the amount of descendants of the immigrants number 244,151, which represents 2.5% of the total national population.

75.9% of those interviewed indicated that they only immigrated once and were looking for work or to stay in the country, while a little more than a fifth part (22.8%) reported having migrated two times or more.

According to the data of the period when they arrived in the Dominican Republic, the survey says that some 38.6% arrived recently.

As he introduced the results of the survey, Temistocles Montas pointed out that in the country there exists a tendency to exaggerate the quantities of the people that live here.

"There exists a tendency in our country to believe that where there are 50, they are 500, and where there are 500, they are 5,000, and where there are 5,000, there are 50,000, and with this a lot of care must be taken, and I bring this into the discussion because one thing is the perception of what the immigrant population might be in the Dominican Republic and another thing is the reality," said Montas.

The official said that what the survey was dealing with is an approximation of the reality of immigration in the Dominican Republic.

He said that 35% of the immigrants coming from Haiti live in rooms in rooming houses; 4.5% live in patios in back of houses; 3.5% in barracks; 1% live in houses and buildings under construction and 1.3% live in housing shared with businesses. At the same time, 49.5% of the Haitian immigrants live in individual houses.

The survey carried out by the National Statistical Office (ONE) says that the immense majority of the immigrants residing in the country work in different sectors of the economy.

Majority have birth certificates

The majority of the immigrants reported that they possess birth certificates from their countries, both those born in Haiti (92.6%) as well as those born in other countries (93.8%). More than half of the immigrants indicted that they had their cédula of identification from their native countries, 51% of Haitians and 57.4% of those that come from other countries.

On the other hand, 37% of the Haitians reported that they had passports, while 85.5% of the immigrants from other countries said that they had that document. The survey indicated that 64.1% of the homes surveyed were headed by men.
