After joining the tunnel, workers accelerate Metro work
On the day of Corpus Christi they worked on the bridge and two stations
EAST SANTO DOMINGO. Two weeks after the Office for the Reorganization of Transportation (Opret) joined the 3 km underground tunnel that goes under San Vicente de Paul Avenue, the work on the construction of the cable - stayed bridge over the Ozama River and the four stations contemplated in the extension of the second Santo Domingo Metro line (L2 Este) showed significant advances.
During a tour throughout the project in East Santo Domingo, Diario Libre reporters observed that at the head of the Francisco Del Rosario Sanchez bridge (the 17), workers were working hard on the construction of the columns that would support the 800 m long bridge.
In the meantime at station 22, located on San Vicente de Paul at the intersection of Fernandez de Navarrete Avenue, they were doing stucco or rendering work. On Trina de Moya Street several men were adjusting four large columns, which would be used to support station Num. 23.
In the meantime, at San Vicente de Paul at the intersection with Mella Highway, several heavy machines including cranes were working on station Num. 24.
Second phase
It was impossible to establish contact yesterday with the deputy director of the Opret, Leonel Carrasco, in order to confirm whether they have begun the concrete work, the placement of drainage, floors, counter plates and rails (in the tunnel).
It will be recalled that the director of Opret, Diandino Peña, reported that this is the stage that would continue, once the tunnel was joined underneath the San Vivente de Paul Avenue.
The numbers
The director of the Office for the Reorganization of Transportation indicated last month that the cost of the project (tunnel, stations and bridge) amounts to US$385 million.
The cable stayed bridge involves an investment of RD$2.5 billion, and the six trains (including electromechanical projects and technological material) run around US$95 million.
As of last 20 May, the government had dispersed for theL2 East, US$120 million. The line will go from the Francisco Del Rosario Sanchez Bridge (17) to the Megacentro shopping mall.
