Carolina, Chavez' Dominican girlfriend, tells of her experiences
"Mama and I used to laugh when Hugo said he would be president"
SD. Carolina Cabrera, the old formal girlfriend of the departed Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, told the Diario Libre from Texas, where she lives now, about the relationship she and her family had with the president.
Cabrera refuted the story that the then lieutenant of the Venezuelan Army lived in any other house that was not #104 Gabriel Morillo in the Los Mina section where Cabrera's mother's family lived.
She indicated nonetheless, that the young man was a people magnet. "Hugo always drew the masses. Chavez loved to recite poetry and make speeches. When he started to recite the people would sit around him. Hugo's greatest desire was to go to Los Mina and sit in our house and read those poems," recalled Carolina, who graduated in Psychology in the United States.
Carolina Cabrera says that her mother, now a lady of more than 80, and she used to laugh when Hugo Chavez talked about his political interests. "My mother and I would laugh, when Hugo told us that he was going to be the President of Venezuela," she said.
The lady said that in 1978 she established a formal relationship with Hugo Chavez, "during which the President was always very respectful." The formality of Chavez reached such a level that after the end of the relationship she maintained ties with the President. "Hugo adopted us as a family. When he came to the country he would say "I am going to stay with my family" and he would ask for permission to stay with us," she noted.
According to Cabrera, after the first visit in 1978, Chavez continued visiting the country and the family until 1986 "nearly every year", when he was made a captain. "Then when he returned I had married an American military person and I had gone to live in Germany," she said. Ms. Cabrera emphasized that Hugo Chavez always stayed overnight in the Cabrera family house when he visited the country.
"Never in Catanga, nor in any other place did the President live, neither did he stay four months in Cristobal Rojas," she finished saying.
