Charcoal ovens also in El Higüero, in Greater Santo Domingo

They are 21 km from the Ministry of the Environment

SD. During the weekend, Diario Libre received a report from a citizen alerting the newspaper to the fact that in the area surrounding El Higüero they were cutting down the trees to produce charcoal.

The newspaper decided to investigate the area close to Los Aguacates, on the border between Pedro Brand and North Santo Domingo, in Greater Santo Domingo. First they carried out a tour on foot along a path from west to east from what of the rural roads that lead to Los Aguacates.

In a kilometer and a half on a single path the reporters found the remains of six charcoal ovens, some from a few months ago and one that still issued the smell of burned wood.

The ovens can be found just 21 km to the north of the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources. Not very far from this place, they could hear the noise of an ax at work but the reporters could not find the "woodcutter."

Very close to the road for vehicles they found an oven nearly ready to be lit and another being prepared to be set up. Much of the area that was cut down and seen by the Diario Libre team has not been used for garden plots ("conucos"), although in some parts there is evidence of chickpeas and yucca.

The forest in this area is humid broadleaf and regeneration, some parts presenting a fairly dense forest. Next to the new Beltway Avenue, the team was able to observe in the distance what seemed to be the burning of part of the forest or possibly charcoal ovens on fire.

Two children that were in the place, and for legal reasons Diario libre cannot mention their names, told the reporters that the practice is extended throughout the entire area and has been going on for some years and that the ovens are set up in any area.

They assured the reporters that they had seen trucks from Santo Domingo which come to pick up the bags of charcoal which, according to them, are sold in the colmados.

Equipped with a drone, the reporters took a tour of an area of 2 km around and they could see that the ovens are present in many areas, some of them active.
