Clinic closed and surgeon arrested for malpractice
Four women presented formal complaints against Dr. Johan Tapia Bueno
SANTO DOMINGO. The District Attorney for the National District ordered the arrest of Dr. Johan Tapia Bueno, who was formally charged with medical malpractice by four women on whom he performed plastic surgery.
The doctor, who voluntarily turned himself in, was questioned by the District Attorney for the National District, Alejandro Moscoso Segarra, who did not want to offer any details to the press.
Meanwhile, the lawyer Juan Tomas Vargas Deschamps, one of the legal representatives of Tapia Bueno, saide that his client is at the disposal of the Justice Department and that he was taken to the cells of the Palace of Justice because "the magistrate wanted to continue talking to him."
"He has to pay for what he did"
Previous to the interrogation of Tapia Bueno, four of his patients made formal complaints against the doctor, who they accuse of medical malpractice, causing them severe health complications.
"He has to pay for what he did and pay dearly", said Sandra Betances, one of the plaintiffs. Also filing charges were Bienvenida Hernandez, Miguelina Escobosa and Rosario Garcia.
Yesterday morning, the Ministry of Public Health ordered the closure of the Dr. Tapia Bueno's clinic.
The accusations against the doctor came as the result of an investigation by journalist Alicia Ortega, after the results of the case of the television producer Hermes Meccariello, also a patient of Dr. Tapia Bueno were revealed.
Clinic is closed down
Public Health searched and closed down the Clinica Brazil, where the television hostess and producer Hermes Meccariello underwent a liposuction procedure of the thighs.
The authorities declared that the closure of the clinic was due to the fact that the center lacked a license and did not comply with sanitary requirements.
A commission headed by the assistant prosecutor Anibelka Guzman Garcia and the assistant to the head of the Department of Licensing, Beato Francisco, seized and anesthesia machine, a surgery, sterilized instruments, towels, alcohol, honey and other things.
Beato Francisco reported that the establishment located in an apartment building on the Paseo de Locutores Street #62 is prohibited from continuing its work and so is Mr. Johan Manuel Tapia Bueno, "who has not been able to prove he is a surgeon and who does not belong to the Dominican Society of Plastic Surgeons", besides the fact of being accused of malpractice, according to a note from Public Health.
Regarding Tapia Bueno, the television program "EL Informe" revealed that at least 10 women that had undergone plastic surgery procedures with him had been close to losing their lives. Among these women is the television producer Meccariello, who needed surgery to remove a serious infection in both legs and will undergo another procedure shortly.
In the search, the Justice Department proved that the operating room on the medical center lack basic instruments for procedures of the types performed there.
The representative of the Justice Department said that besides the case handed over by the health authorities, they, too, would carry out an investigation. There were two dental clinics also operating in the same facility.
