Danilo Medina calls on the young to have a little patience
Government needs time and support in order to do what it wants
SD. After recognizing that the citizens, especially the young, have more than sufficient reasons for not trusting the politicians in general, President Danilo Medina asked last night for "a little patience" in order to earn with deeds their trust.
As he gave a speech over a network of radio and television stations, in order to report on the actions of his administration in the first 100 days of his period, the President said that few government have been able to demonstrate in a little over three months a list of promises fulfilled a long as the one he presented in his speech.
He called on the people not to doubt his willingness to take the country forward, with firmness, honestly and justice, although there are a lot of deficiencies.
"As with you, a father or mother of a family, when you cannot do all that you wish for your family, with the speed that the family needs, the government also needs time and support in order to do all that it wants and all that the people desire and need," stated Medina.
And then he asked his audience to look to the future with hope and at the present without vengeance, and he called on them not to lose time throwing stones back, and to change "these stones into bricks, so that, with them, they can build a great future for our people."
Transparency and austerity
Medina recalled that his administration initiated the change with measures that confirm his commitment to have a moral government, without abuses and without privileges, which was why he insisted on being the first one to sign the Code of Ethical Guidelines and demanded that his cabinet also sign it.
"Every official knows that if he does not fulfill what is written there, he will be summarily fired and will be held accountable for his acts before the courts," he said.
After this measure, the Chief of state referred to the fact that he issued Decree 499-12, with dispositions to improve the efficiency of the government and put an end to any type of unnecessary expenditures.
"This put an end, for example, to the use of government credit cards for private expenses, the purchase of luxury vehicles and the celebrations of parties," he said.
He cited the fact that this decree was combined with Law 247-12 that reduces the number of deputy ministers to six and the closure of several institutions.
Main accomplishments
President Medina stressed the start of the Quisqueya Learns with You Plan with which he intends to rid the country of illiteracy within the next two years. Moreover, he talked about the integration of the Solidarity and Progressing programs which are aimed at lifting more than 800,000 families out of poverty.
He also said that he put RD$6.1 billion at the disposal of small businesses, through the Banreservas Foundation, Promipyme and the recently created Banca Solidaria, which has granted more than RD$400 million in loans, permitting 4,500 micro-businesses to achieve credit for the first time.
