DNCD says it trapped last big capo of Agosto network
Federal agents came to the country and interrogated Eddy Brito in the District Attorney's office
SANTO DOMINGO. Yuber Enrique Mendez Mendez (Oreganito), considered to be the right hand of the network of Puerto Rican Jose Figueroa Agosto, and whose fortune is calculated at more thatn RD$10 billion, became just another prisoner that is wanted in extradition by the United States penal authorities.
The prisoner was mentioned in the table of organization that was presented last January regarding the network of Figueroa Agosto by the DNCD, the National Police and the Attorney General of the Republic.
With the capture of the alleged capo, 25 persons have fallen into the hands of Dominican and Puerto Rican justice, without including at least seven persons that were killed in an alleged cleanup operation of the network of the former fugitive.
The head of the DNCD, Major General Rolando Rosado Mateo, revealed yesterday that with this capture, last Sunday, of the person who was the right hand man of the drug trafficking network of Figueroa Agosto, the network is completely dismantled.
"The arm of the drug traffickers that was arrested three days ago by the DNCD was the last of the major capos that belonged to the network structure of Figueroa Agosto", he said.
Rosado Mateo explained that Mendez was "the one that handled the drug trafficking".
The official discarded that the difficulty of taking down this network was due to its power, but rather to the difficulties that come with these cases in all parts of the world.
He stressed that if in the time when Jesus lived there were kings, princes, fishermen and prostitutes, what can be expected from the results of the mixture of various races and cultures. Mendez is said to have received more than a thousand kilos of cocaine for shipment to the United States.
He is accused of introducing, in 2005, 800 kilograms of cocaine into the United States from South America. The cocaine belonged to the network that was commanded by the Puerto Rican jose Figueroa Agosto.
According to the DNCD (the National Directorate for Drug Control), "Oreganito" has assets far superior to RD$10 billion, as the result of his activities. These assets are located in Bayaguana, in Monte Plata province, in the city of Azua, in the National District and in the municipality of East Santo Domingo.
Nonetheless, there is an arrest warrant out for the prisoner because of a request for extradition from the judicial authorities in the Southern District Court of New York, in the United States on charges of conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute of five or more kilograms of a detectible quantity of cocaine. Mendez was arrested when he tried to get into a white Toyota Hilux pickup truck, license plate L 267851.
On 23 November, the Federal Prosecutor for Puerto Rico reported the arrest of 17 persons after a Federal Grand Jury approved a sheaf of 12 charges for drug trafficking against the network of Figueroa Agosto, in which Eddy Brito is listed as one of the top five officers.

Three federal agents from the United States interrogated Eddy Brito yesterday for more than two hours. Brito, the former husband of Sobeida Felix Morel, was questioned regarding his alleged ties with the Puerto Rican drug trafficker Jose Figueroa Agosto.
One of the agents is a member of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), another is a member of the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and the third is from the Police in Puerto Rico.
The District Attorney for the National District, Alejandro Moscoso Segarra, limited his comments to saying: "No comment".
