Doctors want morgue opened at Cabral y Baez in Santiago
Doctors in Santiago say that the closure of the morgue was done without planning
SANTIAGO. The difficulties of the National Institute of Forensic Science (Inacif) in the city of Santiago has caused some worries among the medical groups of the city, because of the limitations that the pathologists have to face in order to carry out their work due to the closure of the morgue at the Jose Maria Cabral y Baez Regional University Hospital.
The pathologists complain that the closure of the morgue was done without any planning, and that they have been forced to carry out autopsies in cemeteries. In this sense, the former president of the Dominican Medical College (CMD) branch in Santiago, Dr. Plutarco Arias, suggested to the Ministry of Public Health the outfitting of a temporary area in the Cabral y Baez for doing the autopsies.
He said that he did not know the reasons for sending the bodies to Navarrete for autopsy, since, as he said, there are five hospitals in Santiago where they could be done.
For his part, the spokesman for the Jose Maria Cabral y Baez Regional University Hospital, Dr. Sergio Garcia, asked for pardon from the people of Santiago for the inconveniences caused by the closure of the morgue for repairs.
