High expectations for L2 extension of Metro to ESD
The extension will be announced by Diandino and Juan de los Santos
SD. The Office for the Reorganization of Transportation (OPRET) and the City Government of East Santo Domingo (AESD) will meet today for what could be the official announcement of the continuation of Line 2 of the Metro system towards the provincial capital of the province of Santo Domingo.
The convocation, set for 10:00 a.m. at the Opret headquarters, comes ten days after the mayor of the city, Juan de los Santos, defended the impact that the extension of the Metro Line 2 would have on the region he controls.
De los Santos stressed at that time that the Line 2 would have a social and economic impact of great importance for the "city with the largest growth in the nation" and he added that for this reason he asked President Medina "to order the work on the design of the extension."
"In view of the importance that this project will have, we are asking President Danilo Medina to order the work on the design so that there is time to finish it before he ends his term in 2016," said De los Santos in a letter sent to the media. The East Santo Domingo mayor is a close collaborator of President Medina.
De los Santos has been a fan of Line 2. It was known that during the last few days he has had long meetings inside the Presidential Palace with the Administrative Ministry of the President, Jose Ramon Peralta.
Until now, the Opret has been silent on the request of Mayor De los Santos. The Diario Libre had access to information that the study, design and scope of Line 2 of the Metro were ready and only awaiting the final approval from President Danilo Medina.
In general terms, the construction of the bridge over the Ozama River will cost some RD$2.0 billion; in the meantime the excavations and construction of some five kilometers of the extension and another five stations will need an investment of approximately RD$5.0 billion.
Nevertheless, before the request by the mayor, the Opret presented three possible projects for the continuation of Line 2 of the Metro which included the extension into East Santo Domingo and reaching Mella Highway; a line to the Colonial Zone and another towards Los Alcarrizos.
