Huge explosion shakes Santiago area

The fire destroyed 8 vehicles and a salami factory

The fire lightened the sky and could be seen from any distance
SANTIAGO. At least 6 persons were burned by the explosion that occurred in a propane filling station (LPG) located in the community of El Jobo in Tamboril, causing panic among the people living in the neighborhood of the fire.

Among the victims was Francisco Vega who presented burns in different parts of his body but who is out of danger, according to reports from the doctors who treated him.

In addition there were three fire fighters from Santiago injured in the fire and they were transferred to the Regional University Hospital Jose Maria Cabral y Baez.


The explosion, followed by a great fire that lit the sky and could be seen from some distance away, occurred at the Ana Gas facility which was totally destroyed.


During the fire there were 8 vehicles destroyed also, plus a nearby factory that made salamis.

The fire started at 8:38 last night and was put out at near 10:00 pm with the help of 10 fire fighting units from Tamboril, Santiago, Moca. La Vega and other towns.

Some witnesses said that the explosion was caused by an escape from the cylinder in a vehicle that was being filled up.

Nonetheless, the chief of the Santiago Fire Department, Colonel Alexis Moscat, said that the real causes are under investigation.
