Medina will address a speech to the nation tomorrow

The theme of the speech was not revealed; it is believed it will be on the Normalization Plan

SANTO DOMINGO. At a time in which the expectations of the country are surrounding the position of President Danilo Medina regarding the reelection, the Directorate of Communication (Dicom) reported yesterday that the President will address the nation tomorrow, 17 June, the date on which the National Plan of Normalization of Foreigners comes to an end.

Roberto Rodriguez Marchena, the government spokesman, published on the Twitter account of the Presidency, and then confirmed it during a press conference that the speech would be after 9:00 p.m., but he did not offer more details, nor did he specify whether the issue to be referred to is the reelection or the Plan.

He said that the President has felt that the time has come to speak to the country. He recalled that the Chief of State has said that he would talk more than just with words, with deeds.

"The President is very up-to-date regarding the feeling of the Dominican people, of what goes to the heart of the Dominican people, and he feels that the moment has arrived, which is the most opportune moment to speak to the country."

Rodriguez Marchena said that the speech will be taped and retransmitted by radio, television, Internet, blogs and other media in order that the people can listen to and read the important speech which the President will offer.

He reported that they have had to prepare more personnel in order to receive the phone calls from the different communication media interested in forming part of the network to retransmit the speech, which according to what he said, made him recall the iconic and emblematic speeches which were given in their time by José Francisco Peña Gomez and Juan Bosch, when the Dominican people could walk through the streets and go listening to the speeches and not miss a single detail.

"I wish to thank the extraordinary and absolute receptivity which we are having, not only by the media, but also by the Dominican people," said Rodriguez Marchena.

He said that the words that the President will pronounce have generated much enthusiasm within the population.

Last week a reporter asked the President regarding the Normalization Plan and its deadline, to which he responded: "Soon, soon, we will talk."

The promise

On several occasions President Danilo Medina has promised the reporters that cover government headquarters that at the right time he would speak regarding the issue of reelection. The last time that he spoke of diverse issues with the press was 20 August 2014, when regarding reelection he said: "At the right time I'm going to issue my opinion, if you still will want it."
