Minerd announces meeting with school owners
SANTO DOMINGO. The Minister of Education reported yesterday that this Thursday he will meet with the Association of Private School Owners, and the following week with the Parents' Associations of the private schools, and later with the owners of the school text publishers, in order to find a definitive solution to the issue of price speculation on textbooks.
Carlos Amarante Baret said that "we have to find a definitive solution to the problem, so that next year and the following years the issue does not come up again and it is definitely solved."
Interviewed on the Uno + Uno program which is transmitted by Teleantillas, the official pointed out that every time the school year starts, the nagging and haggling starts again, and three weeks later nobody remembers anything. However, he will follow up and put an end to this problem.
Santiago
In the city of Santiago, the Consumers and Customers Association of the Province of Santiago (Asocoupsa) yesterday asked the National Congress for the urgent approval of a law that regulates the price of the textbooks used in the private educational centers in the Dominican Republic.
The entity says in a press release that the Congress should prevent the publishers from increasing the prices of the books each year, to the prejudice of the parents of the students.
Asocoupsa suggested that the legislators convene the representatives of the publishers and the consumer associations of the country in order to create a commission that could deal with the issue.
They said that each year, the parents of the students face problems in sending their children to the schools due to the high prices of the textbooks.
Recently the members of the new leadership of the Chamber of Deputies showed that they were "very worried" over the high prices of school textbooks.
