Optimism in the bi-national market of Dajabon

DAJABON. Local merchants expect that today the bi-national market between Dominicans and Haitians reopens, after the authorities of the neighboring country impeded the business for nearly 5 hours last Friday, 26 June.

The president of the United Merchants Federation of Dajabon, Freddy Morillo, said that the local retailers, as well as their Haitian counterparts hope that the activity is a normal. "We have the perception that tomorrow's market - today Monday - will be held tranquilly, as is the custom. Already the Haitian Prime Minister stated that there is no ban on Dominican products as was said last week," Freddy Morillo told the Diario Libre.

The local merchants move around RD$60 million on Mondays and Fridays, the days when the fair is going on, but last Friday, the measure left economic losses of more than RD$40 million. In order to avoid the commercial closure on the frontier, the president of the United Merchants Federation of Dajabon, expressed the need to establish a free trade market with Haiti. Escolastico Suero, the president of the Poultry Dealers Association of Dajabon, said "everything is planned for us to be able to sell our products when the gate opens at about 8:00 in the morning, we hope they don't come up with another stupidity."
