Review Assembly convened for Saturday

In order to take a decision, they need the presence of more than half of the members of each one of the chambers

SANTO DOMINGO. The Senate President, Cristina Lizardo, convened for this Saturday, at 10:00 in the morning, the meeting of the National Review Assembly in order to reform article 124 of the Constitution and establish a transitional article which prohibits President Danilo Medina to present himself again, in case he is the candidate for the 2016 - 2020 term of office.

The need for the constitutional reform was declared by means of a law approved by the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies and enacted yesterday by President Danilo Medina with Law Num. 24 - 15, since according to article 270 of the Magna Carta it could not be observed by the Executive Power.

Article 271 of the Constitution establishes that in order to resolve anything regarding the proposed reform, the National Review Assembly will meet "within the 15 days following the publication of the law which declares the need for the reform, with the presence of more than half of the members of each one of the chambers. Their decisions will be passed by a two-thirds majority of the votes."

Law 24 - 15 indicates, in article 2, that the reform has as the objective to allow the President of the Republic to opt for a second and unique consecutive constitutional term of office, not being able to stand for election ever again for the same office.
