State payroll has 531,532 employees and 95,000 pensioners
Monthly salaries pay out RD$9.681 billion
SANTO DOMINGO. The central government and the decentralized institutions have 531,532 employees as of November of this year. By adding the 95,031 civilian pensioners that existed at that date the state payroll climbs to 626,563 persons, and the payroll goes to RD$9.681 billion pesos.
This information includes the National Congress, the Attorney General of the Republic, the Justice Department, the Central Electoral Board, the Chamber of Accounts and the General Directorates of Customs and Internal Taxes, since in their organic laws they are assigned administrative and budgetary autonomy.
According to the numbers of the General Controller of the Republic, as of November of this year, the central government had 473,121 employees, including the pensioners, with the largest percentage belonging to the Ministry of Education with 114,977 employees; they are followed by the Ministry of Public Health, with 60,603, and the Armed Forces with 54,842 active members.
If we discount the number of civilian pensioners, which as of November of this year numbered 95,031, the number of government employees reached 378,090 workers. This last number, as of July of this year, was 373,862 persons. The general payroll of the central government, including the civilian pensioners, was RD$6,789 billion each month.
If the RD$824 million paid to the civilian pensions is subtracted, the central government pays its active employees the sum of RD$5.964 billion, according to the numbers from the General Controller of the Republic.
At the same time, the number of employees of decentralized institutions reached 153.442 as of September of this year, and the payroll was RD$2.892 billion a month, according to the data.
The Dominican Republic has more than 480 decentralized state entities, including 144 city or municipal governments. The decentralized entities with the most employees are the Banco de Reservas with 5,731 employees; Customs, with 5,388; the Attorney General of the Republic with 5,521; followed by the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INDRHI), with 4,889; the City Council of the National District with 4,409; the City Council of Santiago, with 3,284 and the municipal government of East Santo Domingo with 3.330 employees.
