Study cites most violent barrios of Santo Domingo
Fights break out from Thursday to Sunday after drinking
SD. Le Valiente, El Almirante, Los Guandules are indicated as three of the most violent sectors of the National District and the province of Santo Domingo.
This comes from a study of the statistics that are handled by the National Forensic Pathology Institute, where each week at least three bodies are brought in from these poor barrios.
The data shows that the homicides in these sectors happen between Thursday and Sunday and the victims are between the ages of 18 and 30.
The daily press releases from the National Police show that in the barrios mentioned, each weekend there are between eight and nine persons wounded by knives or gunshots.
This last weekend, in El Valiente, Alfredo Soto and young, 18 year old Mariben Gonzalez died as the result of a fight that occurred in the El Fuerte "colmadon". (Colmadon: a corner store equipped with loudspeakers and serves as a gathering spot for the local population)
In El Almirante, Francisco Almonte and Marino Mateo died of gunshot wounds, the first on Friday night and the second on Saturday afternoon.
Likewise, on Thursday of last week Rafaela del Rosario died as the result of stab wounds and on Saturday a man of some 25 years of age, and known only as "El Monstruo", died in the barrio.
The evangelical pastor Soto Agramonte, from El Almirante, says that this situation is due to the lack of jobs and the proliferation of drugs in the sector. He told of how very close to the "Multis" (Public housing), there are constant rapes and fights," especially on weekends when they all get drunk."
In Los Guandules the situation is worse. There are several gangs that control the area and they fight for the control of drug sales points.
Ramonita del Rosario, a student, says that everyday there are bloody incidents, and "the situation gets worse as the weekend approaches with the people going crazy and you cannot leave your house."
"Add to this the few Police patrols that are in these sectors and the fact that at night the lights go out and the Police seem to be afraid to come here, they patrol only a little bit and the people are at the mercy of the criminals," said del Rosario.
