The second line of the Santo Domingo Metro starts operations today
SANTO DOMINGO. The second line of the Santo Domingo Metro starts operations today. This will put into service for the people, mostly in the National District, and East and West Santo Domingo, a train system that will go from Francisco del Rosario Sanchez, at the head of the bridge of the same name, all the way to Luperon Avenue along John F. Kennedy Avenue.
All told, there are 12.8 kilometers that will be covered by fifteen trains.
The Office for the Reorganization of Transportation (Opret), which is charged with the construction and management of the Santo Domingo Metro system, has an expectation that in the first year of operation the riders of the Line 2 will reach 120,000 riders a day, the same as Line 1, in its fourth year. And, at the same time, they say that the number of riders that the number of riders that use the Metro system will reach 250,000 customers a day.
Line 2 has been constructed at a cost of US$850 millions, some RD$34,1 billion at the current rate of RD$41.11, during a 40 month construction period. The initial excavation started in December 2010, during the administration of former President Leonel Fernandez (2008-2012), when 95% of the construction took place.
During the first four years of operation of Line 1 of the Santo Domingo Metro they have carried about 100 million passengers with a constant yearly growth.
In 2009, there were 16.9 million riders, in 2010 there were 23.6 million, a 42% increase; in 2011 there were 28.8 million, which was 22% greater than the previous year, and in 2012 there were 30.9 million, another 7% increase, according to the Opret numbers. At the same time, from 1 January to 24 January they carried 1.7 million passengers in 2013.
The Opret says that this increase in passengers has reduced the subsidy from the government from RD$1.05 billion to some RD$400 million.
The greatest attraction of Line 2 is the transfer station located at the Olympic Center, where one can cross from Line 1 to Line 2 and back, for the same price, RD$20.00. This represents a potential savings for the riders that use this route.
The transfer offers the possibility for university students to go from Line 2 to Line 1, which services UASD, O&M, Caribe University, APEC, UTESA and other universities.
Also, in addition, it will rent several commercial locales to banks, and telephone companies that have been prepared to go into service with the opening of the line.
Pending jobs
Nevertheless, Line 2 of the Santo Domingo Metro will not begin with the feeder lines working. This is a service that will complement the Metro service with routes in the barrios near the system. And this, in spite of the fact that 90 buses that will provide the service are on hold due to an apparent lack of resources at the Opret, which has not built the bus stops.
The entry of Line 2 has not coincided with the start of construction of the perimeter avenue along the Isabela and Ozama rivers which will cover the north part of the National District and for which the Opret paid in 2011 huge sums of money to dislodge dozens of families from Gualey.
During the construction or Line 2, there were three municipal parks and the green zone of Gualey that were affected, and so far they have not been repaired by Opret. The green area has been converted into a waste dump for construct refuse to the detriment of the residents of Gualey.
