US does not feel WikiLeaks harm relations with DR

The indicate that reports "sometime include subjective information"

SANTO DOMINGO. The embassy of the United State in the country said yesterday that the diplomatic relations with the Dominican Republic will not be affected by confidential documents of its government that were leaked by WikiLeaks, and that accuse two former officials of the Dominican government of having asked for bribe money from United States companies.

"Although the Government of the United States cannot refer to the authenticity of the supposed State Department documents offer to the press, we can reaffirm that the strength of the relations between the United States and the Dominican Republic will not be undercut by WikiLeaks", said the diplomatic mission in a press communiqué.

In the document, the representation of the United States government explained that the report sent to Washington from the embassies "sometimes include subjective information that can be controversial", and that these do not respond to the official policy of the United States. "They are not an expression of official policy, just as they are not determining factors for the development of the foreign policy of the country".

The embassy argued that since the beginning of the publication of the leaked documents from the United States diplomatic missions, last 28 November, the Assistant Secretary of State for the Western Hemisphere from the State Department, Arturo Valenzuela and other officials of the State Department and the embassy have been in constant contact with the government of the Dominican Republic.

"The United States recognizes the efforts that President Leonel Fernandez has made against corruption", they said.

Last Friday, the Spanish newspaper, El País, published on its website two cables that were leaked by WikiLeaks in which there is indicated the alleged request for bribes by Felix Jimenez, the former Minister of Tourism and Andres Van Der Horst, the former Director of the Airport Authority.

Both officials have expressed their intention of suing the Spanish newspaper for alleged defamation.
