Celebrations for Juan Pablo Duarte Day

SANTO DOMINGO. Diverse activities in Santo Domingo and other provinces around the country mark today as the 197 anniversary of the birth of the nation's father, Juan Pablo Duarte, who was born on 26 January 1813.

One of the most important activities on this date will be headed by President Leonel Fernandez, who, at 5 o'clock in the afternoon will proclaim the new Constitution in force at the National Assembly and formally initiate the Month of the Fatherland, which will continue until 27 Februay.

Meanwhile, Vice President Rafael Alburquerque will represent the Government at the official Te Deum mass celebrated by the Duarte Institute at the Santa Barbara Church in the Colonial Zone at 8:00 in the morning. It was in this church that Duarte was baptized.

Later, at 9:30 a.m., Alburquerque will visit the house where Duarte was born, also in the colonial Zone and half an hour later he will deposit a floral offering at the Altar of the Fatherland where the remains of the Founding Father lay.

At the same time, the president of the Permanent Commission for National Commemorations (CPEP), Juan Daniel Balcacer, will head up the official activities in San Francisco de Macoris, provincial capital of Duarte province.

The CPEP explained in a press release that it had put together a broad program of conferences, both in the country as well as overseas, that will be given by important historians that will talk on the theme of "Duarte and the Constitution" and "Duarte and national independence."

On the other hand, during the month of February, several books will be released on the issue of the independence, authored by historians Alcides and Leonidas Garcia Lluberes, Emilio Rodriguez Demorizi and writer Rafael Abreu Licairac. These books have been out of print for several years and constitute an indispensible source of information for students of the Dominican independence movement.

The CPEP, as is its tradition, will also sponsor pictorial exhibitions covering the revolutionary career of Juan Pablo Duarte in the front part of Independence Park, in the National Library of the Dominican Republic and in Santiago, in front of the governor's office. These exhibitions will move around the country, according to the press release.

"In spite of the sadness that affects us, for the tragedy that occurred in the neighboring country of Haiti, it is a civic duty to remember our great men and their deeds that made them worthy of being called "Heroes of the Fatherland." Therefore, on this occasion, we have prepared a series of events limited to commemorating with solemnity and reverence the Founding Fathers and the events they carried out," said Balcacer.

Juan Pablo Duarte is the principal founder of the La Trinitaria revolutionary movement that carried out the move to national independence from Haitian domination in 1844 and that paved the way for the creation of the Dominican Republic.
