Construction begins on Puntarena project

Danilo Medina and Rainieri head groundbreaking ceremony

SABANA BUEY, PERAVIA. With the groundbreaking ceremony, headed yesterday by President Danilo Medina and businessman Frank Rainieri, the president of the Punta Cana Group, the construction work officially began yesterday on the Puntarena tourist project, located some 33 km from Bani, the provincial capital of Peravia province.

The project will cover 15,000,000 m² and some 7 km of coastline, designed with all the basic services of high quality, as well as security, a system for the treatment of waste waters and collection of garbage, permanent energy and drinking water.

As he gave the keynote speech, Rainieri explained that in the first phase, which they have called Flamingo Bay (Bahía Flamencos), because of the birds that inhabit the area, they will develop an area of 2,000,000 m² with areas of beaches and hills.

It will also have, two areas for hotels, with a capacity of 1200 rooms each, with no more than four floors in height, swimming pools, recreational areas, restaurants, and all the comfort that is required of hotels at this level, said the tourist a businessman.

In a like manner, the first phase contemplates a condo - hotel with 180 apartments on the beach, with a clubhouse, recreational area, and a dock area for 15 boats and other facilities.

He stressed that the Rainieri family, together with its partners in the Rizek, Selman and Reid groups, will create a unique destination in the country, which will open the doors to the particularly beautiful and diverse region of the South of the Dominican Republic. "The project has been conceived with a philosophy that respects the natural resources, and includes an area for the preservation of these resources, inspired by the experience of more than 20 years at the Punta Cana Ecological Foundation," he pointed out.

Rainieri invited those present to close their eyes and visualize the place as it is today, so that within five years they will be witnesses to what with vision, perseverance and work will be built.

In the meantime, the Minister of Tourism, Francisco Javier Garcia, said that the activity will light a spark which is going to set fire to the fields of development of all the southern region of the country.

He said that Puntarena is the type of project of high standards and high quality.

Also attending the ground-breaking ceremony were the ministers of the Presidency, Jose Ramon Peralta; Public Works, Gonzalo Castillo, as well as the representatives of the Rizek, Selman and Reid families. Senators Wilton Guerrero of Peravia and Charlie Mariotti of Monte Plata were joined by local civil and military authorities.
