Indotel reports that 75% of prepaid telephones have been validated
The 90 day time frame given to customers to identify their numbers ends next month
SANTO DOMINGO. The Dominican Telecommunications Institute (Indotel) reported that 75% of the prepaid cell phones have been identified by their owners at the corresponding telephone companies and service providers.
This means that 5,895,604 of the 7,812,592 cell phones that exist in the Dominican Republic have been properly identified by their owners.
This information is contained in a report given to Diario Libre by the communications manager of Indotel, which collects the statistics up until 4 August. This report indicates that as of this date, 1,384,762 telephone lines have been suspended (18%), while 532,226 phone lines have been canceled (7%).
With respect to last June, when the disposition by the Telecommunications Institute which said that all prepaid phone lines (cell phones with prepaid cards) should be identified, went into effect, the growth in the identification of the numbers has been around 15%. "The process has developed in a satisfactory manner, and at the present time all the cell phones that are working in the Dominican Republic are properly identified with the information of their owners," assured the Institute.
It will be recalled that before the enactment of the 911 Emergency System, the Telecommunications Institute ordered that all prepaid phone lines should be identified by their owners, in order to facilitate the identification of the phone calls. In addition they intended to reduce the incidence of crime since in the past many incidents were programmed by these cell phones.
In Resolution 0 27 - 14, of 9 June, the Telecommunications Institute gave a 90 day time. For the owners of prepaid cell phones that were suspended by the service providers to provide proper identification. This deadline ends next month, and the lies that have not been properly identified will be canceled.
