JCE members meet with Fernandez for more than an hour

Observers will meet with presidential candidates

SANTO DOMINGO. President Leonel Fernandez met last night with the members of the Plenary of the Central Electoral Board in his office at the Presidential Palace. The delivered to the President a report on the progress of the elections and they talked about the constitutional guarantees that the Dominican state should offer to the actors that will take part in the process.

At the end of the meeting, the president of the JCE, Roberto Rosario, accompanied by the magistrates Eddy Olivares, Cesar Francisco Feliz Feliz, Rosario Graciano and Jose Angtel Aquino, said that the visit was pro forma and part of a custom during election years to inform the Chief of State regarding the most important event in national politics. The presidential elections are next Sunday, 20 May.

"It was a meeting that was limited to the necessary protocol that has to be fulfilled by the Central Electoral Board during each process," said Rosario.

The JCE president reported, in addition, the President Fernandez will receive tomorrow a delegation of the international observers who have been invited to observe the elections.

Moreover he said that the only thing left to do for the presidential elections is "essentially for all Dominicans to get out an vote," and he guaranteed that the population would know early in the evening the winner of the elections, so that the citizens "could sleep peacefully."

The meeting between the President and the membersof the Plenary of the JCE began at 8:10 p.m. and ended at 9:25 p.m.

The observers

Tonight at 7:00 p.m., the Central Electoral Board has prepared a cocktail reception to formally welcome the international observers.

The activity will take place in Sans Souci.

On Saturday, the observers will hold interviews with the presidential candidates as part of their work of monitoring the election process.

According to the agenda that was prepared, the first candidate that heads the list of meetings with the international observers is that of the PRD, Hipolito Mejia. The appointment is set for between 9:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. in the Hotel Hilton.

The order of the interviews was prepared according to the order that the candidates to the office of President of the Republic appear on the ballots.

The second turn belongs to Danilo Medina, the candidate for the PLD, whose appointment will run from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

Then the presidential candidate for the APD, Max Puig, will meet with them from 10:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Then after a brief recess, the candidate of the Frente Amplio, Julian Serulle is scheduled to meet with the observers from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m.

He will be followed by the presidential candidate for the Dominicans for Change (DxC) party, Eduardo Estrella, from 11:15 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. and thenthe candidate for the Alianza Pais (AlPais), Guillermos Moreno will have his interview from 11:45 until 12:15 p.m.
