Monument to Mirabal Sisters dedicates

During an emotional and well attended ceremony, the municipal government of Tamboril inaugurated a monument honoring the three Mirabal sisters, build in the community of La Cumbre, where the bodies of the heroines were found, killed along with their driver Rufino de la Cruz, on 26 November 1960 during the Trujillo dictatorship. 

The inauguration ceremony began at 11:00 a.m. with the National Anthem and the raising of the flag. Then the symbolic ribbon cutting to the Plaza for the Mirabal Sisters was done and the statues of the three women were unveiled. Their names were Maria Argentina Minerva, Patria Mercedes and Antonia Maria Teresa Mirabal. 

The mayor of Tamboril, Francisco Alvarez said that the project "is a well deserved tribute to the three women that symbolize the struggle for freedom of all Dominicans." 

Speaking for the family, Minister of the environment Jaime David Fernandez Mirabal said that the crime against the tree martyrs and their driver united the efforts to put an end to the Trujillo dictatorship. He said, "This monument also should serve to renew the desires for liberty of the Dominican people and inspire a push for the development of the communities in this area." 

The ceremony was attended by Minister Fernandez Mirabal, Belgica Adela Mirabal (Dede), the children of the three sisters, Manolo Tavares Mirabal, businessman Marcelo Bermudez, Leandro Guzman, Laine Altagracia Morel, Raul Gonzalez and Maria Pena Mirabal as well as people from the surrounding communities. 

Also present were members of the 14 de Junio Movement, the Patria Group, and members of the Dominican Restoration 

Movement, among others.
