PRD announces candidates for May
SANTO DOMINGO. The Dominican Revolutionary Party presented its candidates for senator, deputies and mayors yesterday, at an event where its president, Miguel Vargas Maldonado, defined the established ticket as unsurpassable and the need for balance in Congress.
At an event held at Santo Domingo's Autonomous University's Aula Magna, the surprises came in the shape of the candidates for senator for Santo Domingo province, which will be the current mayor Francisco Peña, for San Cristobal Peggy Cabral and for Espaillat province Rafa Santos, while Orlando Jorge Mera will be the candidate for Santiago.
The most applauded candidacy was Milagros Ortiz Bosch for the National District senator post, and Jesus Vasquez Martinez (Chu), for Maria Trinidad Sanchez.
For the post of the Santo Domingo West municipality the announcement of Francis Peña, son of the current mayor, as candidate, as well as the candidacies for deputy of Maria Teresa Cabrera, former president of the National Teachers Association, Secundino Palacios in the National District and transport union leader Juan Hubieres, for Monte Plata, and Dr. Mario Lama.
For the post of mayor of Santiago the candidate was announced as Radhames Fermin, Alfredo Pacheco was confirmed for the National District, Raul Mondesi for San Cristobal, Luis Ernesto Camilo for San Francisco de Macoris, Remberto Cruz for Espaillat, Carlos Martinez for Puerto Plata, Tonty Rutinel for Santo Domingo East and Francisco Fernandez for Santo Domingo North municipality.
In his speech, Vargas Maldonado stated that the country needed a Congress "that acts as a balance and brake of the PLD government's unlimited uncertainties and appetites, and mayors who listen to their communities and work together with them".
The PRD leader said that a change of direction was needed that must start with the mid-term elections on the 16th of May and that this change is unstoppable because the public yearns for it, and that the government will not succeed in twisting the public will by wasting public funds.
Vargas accused the PLD of deceiving the people because 4 years ago it asked for them to vote for creating a Congress for Progress, but housewives had not progressed because of the high cost of living, workers have lost hundreds of thousands of jobs, young people have no opportunities, while crime lurks in wait for them, and as far as the business community is concerned, these last 4 years have seen tax increases.
A group of women headed by Lourdes Contreras assembled opposite the Aula Magna, in protest against Julio Romero's re-nomination as candidate for the post of deputy for Santo Domingo province.
Nonetheless, although Romero's candidacy was not announced at the event, several deputies confirmed to DL that he is a "confirmed" candidate.
Romero was the subject of a scandal mid-last year when he was reported to have had a sexual relationship with an underage girl, and when she became pregnant he denied paternity.
