The East and Santo Domingo traffic 90% of cocaine

SD. Ninety percent of the cocaine seized by the National Directorate for Drug Control (DNCD) during the three-year (2009-2012) period was seized in Greater Santo Domingo, the East and the province of San Cristobal.

The 19.669 kg of cocaine represent 70% of all the drugs that were stopped during that three year period, more than 26,000 kg, of which 11,902 kg of cocaine was seized by Division 7-East, which operates in Monte Plata and the province of Santo Domingo; Division 1-Central, San Cristobal and the National District, seized 1114 kg and in the East they seized 4,828 kg.

According to General Rolando Rosado Mateo, the commander of the DNCD, the seizures of cocaine were due to the destruction of the gang led by Ramon Antonio del Rosario Puente (Toño Leña), Yubel Enrique Mendez y Mendez, Pascual Cordero Martinez, Emilio Mesa Beltre, Acka Sonner, Luis Fernando Bartolucci Castillo y Luis Sanchez Echeverri.

"We have fortified the coastline of the Caribbean with equipment and we can say that by air or by sea, we are protected," said Rodado Mateo.

In the meantime, in the North region there were 1,055 kg seized, in the South, 490 kg, and in the Northeast, 279 kg.

There were 3,220 kg of marijuana seized, of which 2,129 kg were seized in the South region, 387 kg in the North, 273 kg in Greater Santo Domingo, 221 kg in San Cristobal and the National District, and 135 kg in the East.

According to the memoire delivered by Rosado Mateo, there were 100.7 kg of heroine seized and 60 kg were seized in the province of Santo Domingo, 16 in the National District, 14 in the North region and 9 in the East over the three year period.

Drug money


In spite of the amount of drugs that goes through the East, in this area is where the fourth largest amount of Dominican pesos were seized in drug operation, with RD$3.9 million taken in. The National District leads all others in the amount of pesos with RD$52 million, followed by the North with RD$12.4 million, the Northeast with RD$5.4 millions and the province of Santo Domingo with RD$2.8 million.

Regarding dollars, of the US$9.4 million that were seized, US$9 million were seized in the National District. The rest of the country contributed a little less than US$400,000.
