Minister of Defense and Chancellor will tour the frontier on Saturday

They state that it is not because of political events in Haiti

SANTO DOMINGO. The Minister of Defense, Lieutenant general Maximo William Muñoz Delgado, announced yesterday that next Saturday he will carry out a tool were along all of the frontier together with Chancellor Andres Navarro in order to have contact with national authorities.

He noted that the chancellery has still not had contact with the Dominican authorities stationed on the frontier, and for this reason they will carry out their tour.


He indicated that it is a routine visit that is done 2 or 3 times a year, and it has nothing to do with the situation currently taking place in Haiti.

He said during the time of his military service is always seen that they are carry out visits to the frontier and meetings with the authorities so that they can learn about the situation on the frontier.

Minister Muñoz Delgado said that given the protest events in the neighboring country he had increased by 1200 troops the Specialized Corps of Frontier Ground Security.

When he was asked whether the national authorities have a plan to be applied in case that the Haitian crisis affects this country, the military official said that this always exist, but that the safety issues are confidential.

The minister of Defense was interviewed at the San Isidro Air Base, where he went yesterday to see President Danilo Medina off on his trip to Belize where he participated in the summit of the Central American System of Integration.

Crisis in Haiti

for some several weeks there have been protests in Haiti calling for the government to convene national elections.

The situation has reached levels which caused the resignation of Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe and even the United States called for elections like the opposition is demanding.

Some sectors in the country have expressed their worry over the events of the protests in the neighboring country and fear that they might have consequences in this part of the island.
